Flash Dance

I'm not much for football games. Truth be told, I don't really understand the rules of football because I never really bothered to learn them. The commercials, fatty foods and every once in a while a good wardrobe mishap during halftime are of interest to me, but beyond that I don't really care. However, the topic of games and knowing the rules got me thinking about fashion today and how as consumers we are cajoled into playing all sorts of games by retailers.

In my opinion, things weren't always quite as gimmicky in the game of retail. I may be dating myself here, but I remember when stores like The Gap, Banana Republic and J. Crew had new arrivals for the season at full price. If you wanted them, you paid full price. Next was a mark down and then maybe a second or third markdown, and end of story. Now there are flash sales, final sales, and weekend or holiday promotions that change on almost a daily if not an hourly basis in some cases. An item throughout the course of the week may change drastically in price up and down several times and you've got to know just when to buy. (It's sort of like playing the stock market!)

The dress and shoes I am wearing today represent this frantic, ever-changing style of sale that's become so commonplace today. For example, the chambray shirt dress I am sporting is from LOFT. I keep getting emails from them instructing me to open the email right away for a flash sale and most of the time I ignore these. However, like Pandora and Eve before me, last week my curiosity got the best of me and I took a gander at the flash sale of an extra 50% off everything. I ended up with a few things just to get the free shipping (another little game), so clearly the LOFT marketing strategy is working!

My kate spade Jaylee heels were another item bought through carefully monitoring the sales and prices on the website 6pm.com. Like Amazon, the prices at 6pm.com fluctuate everyday. I bought these shoes when they went down to a low of $159.99. The next day they were $279 and after that $199 and after that $319. It's a crazy roller coaster if you ask me and shows the amount of profit  made on women's clothing and accessories, but somehow I'm always game!

  1. Love this classic and trendy look. I have a dark chambray/denim shirt-dress too but I'd love one in a light wash. Those shoes are the cutest!

    1. I agree that a light wash would look amazing! I thought the dark would be more dressy and work appropriate, but it turns out it is too short for work.

    1. I think it would probably be best just not to shop as opposed to playing the game! However, it's sort of fun to "score" and get some good deals!

    1. Thank you! I love embellishment on anything, but it really turns a simple pair of shoes into something extraordinary.

  8. Hahaha I don't understand football either... I've made it to 30 years old without learning the rules... doesn't bother me! Love the dress dear! Thanks for joining the Celebrate Southern Linkup with J and me! Cheers!

    1. Someone tried to explain the rules to me once when I was a kid and I just zoned out. I've also made it 30 years and I am doing just fine! I'd rather focus on something important like shoes! ;)
